Potatoes Wellington?

The United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2008 as the International Year of the Potato (IYP), adopting a resolution to focus world attention on the importance of the potato in providing food security and alleviating poverty.

Powelstock Wins Wellington Prize!

Dear David,

It is my pleasure to inform you that at the May 15, 2008 Faculty Meeting, your name was chosen to receive the $1,500 Wellington Award (check enclosed). This award, offered annually by lottery draw, honors the young men and women in the rank of Assistant Professor and their hard-working contributions to the university in teaching, scholarship, departmental and university service.

The donor has made three stipulations. First, the lottery must be conducted publicly before the assembled faculty. Second, the prize money may not be used for purposes of normal scholarly advancement. Third, the winner is obligated to present an accurate account of how he or she made use of the funds. This document is to be presented to the President and read to the assembled faculty at the first faculty meeting following the use of the bequest.

The Wellington Award is intended to enliven the spirits and delight the senses of the recipient; it is neither a research grant nor one for the purchase of scholarly paraphernalia. Winners are encouraged to use their imagination and do something out of the ordinary, something they may have dreamed of but dismissed as irrelevant to their immediate and pressing career concerns.

It is offered as a modest contribution toward alleviating the problem of premature burnout. ENJOY!

Jehuda Reinharz, President
Brandeis University

Potatoes don't grow on trees, you know.

Judith and I learned of the International Year of the Potato months ago. When I won the the Wellington Prize, we knew what we had to do. The voice of fate had found us:
